Things to do in St Annes on the Sea

Being a popular seaside resort, there’s plenty for families and for the young at heart in the Garden Town by the Sea, from strolling down St Annes Promenade and taking in the spectacular views to enjoying the parks and gardens and wide open sandy beach, dunes and traditional pier. Enjoy a game of bowls or mini golf, stroll through the parks and browse through the many shops in the town centre, Wood Street, St David’s Road South or perhaps Back St Annes road West – there’s plenty of unique retailers offering that something different!

Located between Lytham and St Annes on the Sea, Fairhaven Lake is a popular destination for a walk around the lake, watching the wildlife, hiring a boat, a round of Adventure Golf or having a picnic. This is a privately owned house on the coast road, mid way between St Anne’s and Lytham but it was the last house that George Formby MBE lived in before his death in 1961. For George Formby fans, it is a popular pilgrimage for photos and there’s a blue plaque on the wall. As this is now a privately owned residence, please respect the owners privacy.

The Lytham St Annes Art Collection is amongst the finest town hall collections in the country and is a unique and varied collection, born primarily from the proceeds of Britain’s industrial past and the philanthropy of affluent patrons who had moved to Lytham St Annes. On 23rd May 1888 the Lifeboat Monument was unveiled near the Pier in St Annes to commemorate the bravery of the lifeboat crews who responded to the distress signals of the barque ‘Mexico’. In total 27 Lifeboat men lost their lives that night.

A free facility on the Promenade opposite the Grand Hotel. Bring your own set of balls and play. The game in its current form was invented in 1907 near Marseille and gained in popularity after WW2 and has spread all over Europe. If you’re new to petanque, rules can be found via the web link.

RNLI Station St Annes

The RNLI Shannon lifeboat Barbara Anne arrived in February 2018 and is based at the RNLI lifeboat station on the Promenade adjacent to the Island complex. There’s a shop at the lifeboat station staffed by volunteers if you wish to pop in and support the great work of this life saving service. The RNLI celebrate 200 years in 2024.

Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club

Founded in 1886, the present course was constructed in 1897. The Clubhouse celebrated its Centenary in 1998 and it is one of the premier links courses in the world, host to eleven Open Championships, two Ryder Cups and numerous other major tournaments including the Women’s and Seniors Open Championships and the Walker Cup in 2015. The AIG Women’s Open returns in 2026.

Founded in 1901, St Annes Old Links is one of the fine championship links of England’s north west coast. In 2018, the club was the first venue to host final qualifying for both the Open Championship and Ricoh Women’s British Open in the same year. St Annes pool is open from 6:30am weekdays (slightly later at weekends) and a variety of sessions are available (check times prior).
